To misquote an old <i>Spirit of the West song, There’s none more Scotch than the Scotch abroad, there’s a place in our hearts for the old Scotch. What that means, is that for many discerning fans of Scotch there is nothing quite like a good Scotch.Fortunately, for local Scotch fans or connoisseurs, the Grand Forks Rotary Club is hosting their sixth annual Scotch Tasting night on Feb. 1 at the gallery 2.“It’s not really a big fundraiser, it’s more of a social event,” said Homer Good, chair of the Scotch Tasting committee. “It’s a Scotch tasting event for single malt Scotch, not for real high end but medium to high end Scotch.”
Beer and wine will also be available for sale for those ‘less sophisticated’, jokes Good. This year, the event will feature nearly 40 different single malt Scotches.“We go through the list of what we’ve had already and see what new Scotches we can bring in,” said Good. “Every year we try to bring in a good selection of different Scotches.”One of the highlights of this year’s Scotch selections is Balvene.Good said the difference between single malt Scotches and other Scotches such as blended, is that the barley used is making the Scotch comes from the same location. He adds that Scotches are well known for their taste, which varies depending on the price and make.“You get a $200 bottle of Scotch and it’ll be smooth as heck,” said Good. “You go down to a $20 bottle of bar scotch and it’ll give you a pretty good ride going down. There’s quite a distinctive difference.” Tickets are $30 and include five taster glasses. There will also be snacks available. Tickets are available at Sears as well as the gallery 2. The event goes from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.
