Sluggish second period sinks Border Bruins

Three weeks into January, the Grand Forks Border Bruins are still chasing their first win of 2011.

The Border Bruins competed with the Nelson Leafs at Grand Forks Arena on Jan. 20 but lost by a final of 5-3. Grand Forks entered the first intermission only down 1-0 but a lethargic start to the second period was largely responsible for the loss as the BBs were outshot 18-8 in stanza two and in fact at the 13:43 mark of that period, Nelson had decided advantage in shots on goal, outshooting the home side 25-9.

Border Bruins Head Coach Jesse Dorrans said that it was probably the proverbial TSN turning point. “They kind of got us back on our heels and I think we just lost a bit of confidence and then they started take over the game,” Dorrans said about the team’s second period play.

“We started to take some undisciplined penalties and that’s when they really started to turn it on.”

While there are only nine games left in the season, the head coach said there are still things the team will work on.

“We’re going to set some mini goals for ourselves and kind of plug through these last nine games,” Dorrans said.

Nitehawks on Jan. 27 and then the Kelowna Chiefs on Jan. 29 – both games go at Grand Forks Arena at 7:30 p.m.
