REC REPORT: Triathlon possible with training

Are you looking for a challenge this spring? Why not register for the seventh annual Pharmasave Christina Lake Triathlon?

The event starts and finishes at the Christina Lake public beach.

The swim distance is 750 metres, which parallels the beach, the bike ride is 20 km, which includes four laps of a 5 km loop, and the run is 5 km out West Lake Drive and back to the park.

The distances are achievable with a little training.

The staff at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre can help you get started with a specific workout for you. We offer triathlon swim training on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Stop by and pick up a training program with complete details from the recreation office. The early-bird deadline is May 31, with registration cut off June 23.

Scuba diving is a great lifelong skill that anyone can learn, providing you have a love for the water.

Serpent Aquatic from Summerland offers scuba lessons for kids at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre once a month.

Kids learn to use specialized equipment designed to teach the students to breathe while floating or submerging under water without interruption.

Scuba Stars is a two-dive program that introduces students to snorkeling and breathing techniques. On completion of the two dives, students can move into the PADI Seal team.

This program teaches the students to submerge while using the specially designed equipment. Students learn to log and journal each dive          experience.

The next session will take place on Sunday, April 10 between 1 and 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required by Thursday. April 7.
