REC REPORT: Triathlon at Christina Lake this weekend

The seventh annual Pharmasave Christina Lake Triathlon takes place at Christina Lake with the KidSprint event at 8:30 a.m. and the adult event at around 9:30 a.m.

The Grand Forks and Christina Lake Recreation Commission would like to welcome all the triathletes to Christina Lake for the seventh annual Pharmasave Christina Lake Triathlon on Sunday, June 26.

The KidSprint event begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by the adult triathlon at around 9:30 a.m.

We would like to inform the community that the streets will be restricted due to the event. The access to the provincial park will be from West Lake Drive to Niemi Road, to the Provincial Park entrance.

The road will be closed west of the park entrance to West Lake Drive. We are asking that you respect the athletes on the routes and obey the traffic controllers and signs. Please help us cheer on the athletes from the street sides or come join us at the park.

The 2010/11 school season will be coming to a close in the next week. The task of finding things to keep the kids occupied for the next two months now begins. The Grand Forks Recreation department (GFREC) will be offering swim lessons throughout the summer months.

Register your little ones for Parent and Tot swim lesson summer camps. Parents can participate with child to learn water safety skills in and around water – help make their first experience in the water a memorable one. The summer camps will be held the week of July 11 and again August 8 from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross summer leadership camp will be scheduled at the public beach in Christina Lake for the week of July 25 – earn both awards in this one-week camp.

Candidates will develop leadership skills, learn safety and rescue techniques and increase their fitness level through timed swims.  Prerequisites for this camp are participants should be a minimum age of 13 years and be able to complete a timed swim requirement. Deadline to register is July 11.
