REC REPORT: Swimming at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre is good for you

Swimming at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre during the winter is good for you.

As parents we understand there is an element of risk our children face when taking part in sports. Whether on a team or participating in individualized physical activity there is a possibility for injury and long-term wear and tear on muscles and joints.

Swimming is an athletic activity that engages several body parts in a far less taxing way. The buoyancy water provides helps to protect growing bones and joints while providing a good source of aerobic exercise.

Swimming also promotes good health, increases endurance and develops stamina.

Red Cross swim lessons should be one of the first lessons children learn. Water safety awareness and skill development can save their lives and having a good relationship with the water opens the door to a host of other water spots and opportunities.

The Grand Forks Aquatic Centre provides many chances for parents to expose and engage their kids in water sport at an early age, beginning with lessons. The first set of Red Cross swim lessons for 2013 starts in January.

Preschool swimming lessons

Preschool lessons for children ages three to five years will run Mondays and Wednesdays for three weeks. Parents can register their children for morning or evening classes Jan. 12 to 30. Swim Kids for ages six and up will begin Jan. 26 and run for seven consecutive Fridays ending March 8.

If parents register their children for the winter set of swim lessons before Dec. 31, they will receive a 10 per cent discount off of the 2013 registration fee.

Competitively swim with the Piranhas Swim Club

Kids who swim competitively or participate in swim clubs learn perseverance, self-discipline and goal setting. They develop relationships with teammates, learning the importance of teamwork and responsibility.

The Grand Forks Piranha Swim Club has had years of success, encouraging and promoting physical activity through fun, friendship and friendly competition. If you would like more information about our local swim club give the recreation department a call.
