REC REPORT: Summer time swimming

Grand Forks Recreation has swimming options to beat the summer heat.

The eighth annual Pharmasave Christina Lake Triathlon was a great success. The Christina Lake Recreation Commission along with Grand Forks Recreation, want to thank our event sponsors and volunteers.

The aquatic centre is heading into its summer public swim schedule. The pool will be closed on Sunday, July 1 for Canada Day and will re-open Monday, July 2 with the summer schedule.

Public swim hours will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 6 to 10 am.  Afternoon swimming will take place Monday to Friday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Friday’s from noon to 4 p.m. will be our Toonie Swim. Pool admission will be $2 per person ages three and up. The aquatic centre will be closed evenings and weekends.

Summer fitness classes at the aquatic centre will continue throughout the summer, providing earlybird circuit weight training Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 6 to 7 a.m. and moderate circuit from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Aquafit classes will take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings 8:45 to 9:45 a.m.

Although public swim is limited over the summer months, there is still a lot going on at the pool. There are five sessions of Red Cross swim lessons, running throughout the summer beginning July 9,16, 23, 30 and Aug. 13. Classes take place between 10 a.m. and noon Monday to Friday. Instruction will be provided for all levels of preschool and swim kids programs.

The National Life Guard Service Award program begins this week. Instructor Marg Kovacs will be putting the candidates through their paces as they learn and develop skills that will help them become lifeguards. And beginning Monday, July 2, instructor Cora Ludwar will be teaching the Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course.  Upon completion of the WSI course requirements, candidates will be prepared and certified to teach Red Cross swim lessons.
