REC REPORT: Sign up kids for some spring sports

Winter doesn’t seem to want to quit this year; however, before we know it the spring flowers will be popping up, the smell of wet grass will fill the air and children will be out playing in the puddles.

There are many signs of spring including the registration of outdoor organized sports.

Boundary Babe Ruth and Boundary Girls Fast Pitch are taking registration for the upcoming season.

Parents can pick up registration forms at the recreation office between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Boundary Youth Soccer has also been taking registrations on line at www.boundaryyouthsoccer.com.

It’s no secret that kids involved in recreation and sport are generally healthier overall.

A recent study of British Columbia youth has proven that kids involved in organized sport and regular exercise have better nutritional behaviour, feel better about their body image and have a higher self-esteem.

Fortunately, the Boundary offers lots of opportunity for kids to get involved in sport. However, in order for these programs to run, adult participation is necessary.

You don’t have to be a parent of a participant to get involved. You don’t have to be an expert at the game. The only prerequisite is being willing to give a few hours of time to impact youth

positively through sport.

For details on how to get involved contact Grand Forks Recreation (GFREC).

March is “Youth Month” at GFREC and we want to encourage kids ages 13 to 18 years to enjoy the facilities with their friends.

Physical activity can be fun.  Bring your friends to the pool or arena and enjoy public swimming and skating at a reduced rate.

Each time you participate, your name will go into a draw for a pass to use the facilities for free for the remainder of the year as well as a one-hour rental at the aquatic centre or the arena for you and 25 of your friends.

Grand Forks Recreation encourages youth to consider a career in lifeguarding and swim instruction.

The pay is great and the hours are flexible. You can start by registering for the Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross camp being offered at the aquatic centre March 21 to 25.

Candidates will develop leadership skills, learn safety and rescue techniques and increase fitness.

Medallion and Cross are lifetime awards and are the prerequisites to the National Lifeguard Service award being offered in June.

***

Also being offered this March is the Assisted Water Safety Instructors (AWSI) course, taking place March 28 to April 1.

AWSI is the prerequisite to the WSI course and upon completion of both, you are certified to teach Red Cross swim lessons.
