Rec Report: Rec centre offers lifesaving course during spring break

Advance leadership training provides you with the training and certification required to become a lifeguard or water safety instructor.

Bronze Medallion develops physical fitness, decision-making and judgment skills. You learn proper tows and carries and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues.

You develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. This is the prerequisite for the Bronze Cross and is a lifetime award.

The Bronze Cross offers the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities.

This course teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, emergency procedures, teamwork and the use of special equipment. This is the prerequisite to the National Lifesaving certification.

The National Lifeguard service award builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge and values taught in the Lifesaving awards.

It is a nationally recognized training program designed to prepare lifeguards to be professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics.

The National Lifeguard Service award is the legal certification for lifeguarding.

The assistant water safety instructor course is a 30-hour course (plus 8 hours of teaching experience) that covers the foundation of instructional skills and is the prerequisite for the water safety course.

The lifesaving instructor course provides you with the skills and knowledge to instruct lifesaving courses through the Lifesaving Society.

This course will be offered Mar. 21 to 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The Bronze Medallion and Cross spring break camp will be held from Mar. 21 to 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The AWSI (Assistant Water Safety Instructor) course will be held from Mar. 28 to Apr. 1. This course will be offered during our spring break swim lessons so participants can complete all the practical teaching hours required for this course.

And don’t forget our evening casual hockey is held on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. The program does get canceled for Border Bruins games and hockey tournaments.

The next session of casual hockey will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5.
