REC REPORT: Piranha swim club training is available

Based on years of research concerning why people drown, the Canadian Red Cross has developed a comprehensive program to educate and train Canadians in water safety.  The programs include swimming and water safety lessons for infants, toddlers, children, teens and adults.

Grand Forks Recreation (GFREC) offers lessons for all ages throughout the entire year. Parent and tot swim lessons are held once weekly for four weeks with a new session starting at the beginning of each month. The next set will start March 1 from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

Preschool lessons for children ages three to five will start April 4. We will be offering both morning and afternoon sessions for the month of April. Classes will be held on Monday and Wednesdays for three weeks.

Pollywogs is an advanced swim lesson program that improves stroke development and strength and increases endurance for children who are interested in competitive swimming. This is the prerequisite for joining the local Piranhas swim club. Children must be between five and eight years of age and have a love for the water. Registration opens on March 1 and spots are limited to 24, so mark the date on your calendar. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays for the month of April.

Red Cross swim lessons will be offered during spring break – this is a great opportunity to get your child swimming before the summer. Classes will be held in the afternoon from March 28 to April 1. The next session will start the first week of July.

If you or your teen loves working with children, has a love for water and would be interested in a career in aquatics, we will be offering the first course needed to become a water safety instructor.

The Assistant Water Safety Instructor course teaches the first steps to becoming an instructor. You will do hands-on training, which prepares you for the water safety course to be held later in the spring. The assistant water safety course will be held during spring break from March 28 to April 1.

Looking for a career change or maybe trying to decide what you want to do in the near future? Check out the Advance Leadership program. The Bronze Medallion and Cross give you the skills and knowledge required to save a life. GFREC is offering these two awards in a condensed spring break camp from March 21 to 25. You can than move onto the National Lifeguard certification which is the training required to work as a paid lifeguard.

Ballroom dance is a great way to get exercise and socialize with friends and partner. Instructor May Berge will be offering classes throughout the month of March. You can register for Monday or Thursday evenings or register for all nine classes.

Learn the basic dance steps for rumba, cha cha, jive, country two-step and much more. Deadline to register is Monday, Feb. 28. Classes will be held at the Grand Forks Arena viewing room from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Pick up a February flyer for the details on schedules or view the recreation brochure on the web at www.rdkb.com.
