REC REPORT: Keeping your new year resolutions

Grand Forks Recreation has new programs to help keep new year resolutions and goals to stay healthy.

It is said approximately 45 per cent of us create new year resolutions at the beginning of each year.

Most of our resolutions have to do with diet, exercise, weight loss or quitting smoking and it is said that 75 per cent of us keep to them through the first week and 64 per cent through the first month.

By the six-month mark, half of us give up altogether and after one year, there are 10 per cent of us successfully meeting our goals.

The bad news is, there are a lot of us feeling like failures right about now but the good news is we’re not alone. It is not easy to maintain a regime if all you started with is desire. We all need tools and support to meet goals and to be successful at them.

Saturday Morning Circuit is a new program, taking place in the fitness room of the aquatic centre.

Beginning Jan. 28 and running until March 3, you can participate in a 45-minute instructor-run cardio and weight-training program providing two session options. Session one takes place from 9:15 to 10 a.m. and session two is from 10:15 to 11 a.m.

The program is designed to allow parents to participate while their children are in swim lessons. However, the classes are open to anyone looking to gain support, knowledge and an increased fitness level in a group setting. Classes require pre-registration by Jan. 21.

Girls and Women on the Move is a program designed by Grand Forks Recreation (GFREC) and funded by Promotion Plus, 2010 Legacy Now, the Government of Canada, the Province of BC and BCRPA (B.C. Recreation and Parks Association).  It provides ladies (12 years and older) the opportunity to try some winter activities they have yet to experience.

We are hoping that by offering these free activities, excitement will be generated and participants will seek further participation in the area they come to love.

On Friday, Jan. 20, ladies will be taught how to downhill ski and learn about winter safety. On Friday, Feb. 10, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing lessons are available and on Friday, Feb. 24, the ladies will experience curling and figure skating.

Transportation to the venues is provided, as well as all of the equipment required. You can register for all three days or just the one that excites you most. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.

There are a variety of drop-in instructor-based programs offered at the aquatic centre from circuit weight training to Aquafit classes. There is also plenty of opportunity for lap swimming, water walking and just taking a break in the hot tub or sauna.

Maybe you’ve already given up on your resolution or you haven’t started it yet. Maybe you are just looking for something different to get yourself active and healthier for 2012. Wherever you are on the road to being your best you, GFREC wants to be your partner on the journey, providing fun and new ways to get there.
