REC REPORT: Fall and hockey time approaching

Grand Forks Arena is starting to chill off and maintenance staff are back and work has begun for another hockey season.

For those eager hockey players wanting to get their legs back in shape, check out the Border Bruins rep prep hockey camp starting Monday, Aug. 29.

For minor hockey parents wanting to get a jump on the season, there will be an early bird registration on Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the arena viewing room. You can also visit its new website at www.grandforksmha.ca or register at the Youth Open House on Thursday, Sept. 8 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

This is the final week of the summer pool schedule. Aug. 20 to Oct. 1 the aquatic centre will be closed for annual maintenance. We re-open with the fall schedule on Sunday, Oct. 2 with a loonie/toonie swim from 1 to 6 p.m.

The fall will be packed full of fitness programs to choose from.

Circuit shape up for fall 2011 offers a complete workout combining cardio and lightweight intervals.

Classes will be held in the fitness room at the aquatic centre on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. starting Oct. 11. Pre-registration is required by Oct. 4.

Aquafit to the max offers an intense evening aquafit class combining shallow and deepwater workouts using specialized aquatic fitness equipment.

Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m. starting Oct. 17.  Pre-registration deadline will be Oct. 9.

Get up and get walking with the self-led walking group.  Meet at aquatic centre parking lot Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 7:30 a.m.

You can go at your own pace, go your own distance with no commitment and no fee.  Put one foot in front of the other and walk for a healthier you.

This is a great alternative while the pool is shut down.
