The Grand Forks Secondary (GFSS) junior girls basketball team fell to Mount Sentinel (South Slocan) 48-29 in an exhibition game Monday in Grand Forks.

GFSS played well in the first half and were only down by five, 20-15, at half-time. But the Wildcats from Mount Sentinel got some timely steals and hit some big shots to pull ahead and eventually win the game handily led by 18 points from Els Hyrniw. Alyssa Makortoff and Haeley Leslie led the Wolves with eight points each.

"We had a strong first half," said coach Craig Lindsay. "The girls were really passing the ball well and attacking. In the second half we tried a few new things that we just started working on in practice and weren't as successful."

Lindsay was pleased with the Wolves play overall and the improvement of the players.

"We knew Mount Sentinel would be tough — they've got pretty much everyone back from last year's team which was quite good," he said. "But we were right there with them for at least one half."

The GFSS junior girls are off until Jan. 23/24 when they go to the Boundary Central (Midway) tournament.
