GFSS senior girls to host Kootenay zone finals

The Grand Forks Secondary (GFSS) senior girls basketball team is getting ready to host the Kootenay AA Girls zone finals from Feb. 25 to 26.

With a sparkling record of 12 wins – 4 losses to date, the high-scoring GFSS girls are seeded No. 2 in the six-team tourney – teams coming include Golden, Invermere, Creston, Trail and L.V. Rogers (LVR) from Nelson.

The zone winner will fill the Kootenay berth at the 16-team Sr. Girls AA Provincials to be held March 9 to 12 in Kamloops.

Despite the flu bug that hit a number of players recently, coaches Shayne Konar and Sheryl Williams are pleased with how the team continues to play.

The team has averaged nearly 70 pts a game recently, with a win over Rossland 79 – 70 and a narrow loss to LVR 61 – 58.

“They are fun to watch,” said the coaches about the team’s determination and hard work on the court. “Come out and see some good basketball.”

Game time is 6 p.m. this Friday at the GFSS gym. Fans are welcome and admission is free.Cheer on the GFSS girls.
