The Grand Forks Secondary School junior girls basketball Wolves won two of four games on the weekend at their home tournament to take third place out of fourth.

The team opened up with a convincing 49-8 win over Boundary Central (Midway) led by 10 points each from Alyssa Makortoff and Veronica Bolton.

Next up, the Wolves played Mount Sentinel from South Slocan. The Wolves, coached by former SFU star Tekki Brown-Hyrniw, shredded the GFSS press but struggled on the boards as the Wolves played aggressively.

GFSS held a one point lead at half-time, 17-16, but the second half went back and forth. A late run put Mt. Sentinel up by three, but the Wolves scored to cut the lead to one. The home team had a chance to win at the end, but were unable to convert. The final score was Mt. Sentinel 30, GFSS 28.

Top scorer for GFSS was Makortoff with six points. Sian Neilson led MSSS with 11 points.

In their final round-robin game, Grand Forks Secondary took on a tall team from South Okanagan Secondary in Oliver.

"The Hornets ran a stingy 2-3 zone defence which gave us a lot of trouble," said coach Craig Lindsay. "We hadn't seen a zone before and haven't practice much against one. But that's what tournament are for. Too see what you need to work on."

Oliver pushed out to a quick 12-4 lead on their way to a solid 33-20 victory led by 10 points from Sierra Calendar.

Riley Steinback led the Wolves with six points.

In the bronze medal game, GFSS played Midway once more, winning this time by 45-14. Keyra Stooshnoff led the Wolves with 12 points, while Kristen Delgado added eight.

"We did a much better job in our last game or running our offence and getting the ball to our posts," said Lindsay. "All in all, it was a good weekend for us. All the players helped out and contributed and improved over the four games."

Next up, GFSS plays J.L. Crowe at home on Thursday before heading to Osoyoos for a tournament there on the weekend.

"It's our big road tournament, so it should be a lot of fun," said Lindsay. "Plus, we'll get a chance to play some different teams and try some new things out on the floor."
