Despite being competitive against the opposition, players of the Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS) co-ed Wolves that played the Harlem Crowns last Thursday were looking to have some fun.

The final was 67-61 in favour of the Crowns and the exhibition game served as a fundraiser for GFSS’ graduating class with the Crowns entertaining the crowd with slam dunks, improv comic antics, and as a result, players didn’t take the game too seriously either.

“It’s fun, it’s relaxing and we were here just to have a good time,” explained GFSS player Damien Rougeau. “It’s a chance to have fun and learn because you see a lot of moves that the guys do and you want to do them too. You see them execute them perfectly.”

Nevertheless, despite the relaxed nature of the game, Rougeau did try a dunk of his own during the game, as he said he was trying to show the Crowns some of his own moves.

“I was trying to match them,” Rougeau said with a laugh.

Point guard Alexis Vatcher admitted to being intimidated by the Harlem Crowns, but like Rougeau had a good time, even chipping in with a couple of baskets.

“You definitely feel (the Crowns’ players) stepping back, you know they’re going to let you score,” Vatcher explained. “When you make a shot in a game like this, you’re feeling pretty cool.”

The event was well attended and according to organizers, the game raised over $1,000.
