With Grand Forks minor hockey starting up in a few weeks, several area youngsters were hitting the ice early to work on their skills at the Border Bruins Development Camp at the Grand Forks Arena.

“It was a four day camp to get the players back into the swing of things,” said Bruins head coach Nick Deschenes, who was the head coach of the camp as well. “We’re working on all the basic skills like passing, shooting, skating and stick-handling. We’re trying to have some fun as well.”

The camp attracted players from ages five up to 15 and was split into different age and skill levels.

“Last year, the program had about 30 players and this year we’re over 40,” said Deschenes. “So we’re growing it. We incorporated on-ice skill work with off-ice dryland training and a game component in the afternoon.”

Helping Deschenes and the Bruin’s coaching staff were current Border Bruin players.
