The Christina Lake Golf Club will be holding its club championship this Saturday and Sunday (June 2 and 3).

The event, open to club members, will have men’s and ladies’ sides and has been going for close to 50 years.

“Usually we get about 80 men and 20 ladies participating in it and from this tournament we determine our club champ, our senior men’s club champ, our super senior men’s club champ and our ladies’ club champion,” explains Christina Lake Golf Club GM Kevin Maffioli.

“It’s a straight tournament, just a two-day, stroke-play event. Count all your stokes up, nothing funky. Just straight golf.”

The Christina Lake Golf Club Championship will also see players grouped based on skill level.

“It’s also flighted, so we do a net side with handicaps as well, where if you’re a 20-handicap, we take 20 (strokes) off your score that day with your net score, there are also handicap divisions as well for different varying abilities,” Maffioli says.

The golf club’s GM said that the club championship is an event for the locals to come to the course, compete for two days and see who can take home the trophies.

“It’s a pretty nice plaque, it’s got a lot of history on it for sure,” says Maffioli.

Maffioli said that the tournament has been taking place (with no breaks) since 1964 and there have been a lot of different winners – 21 overall.

Going into this weekend, the defending champions are Graeme Carlson (men), Wayne Priebe (senior), Bert Burnell-Higgs (super senior) and Connie Kostash (ladies).

While the club championship is about 48 years old, the actual club is having its 50th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 22.

“The Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) is going to send somebody and they’re going to give us a plaque and we’re going to have an open day of play for any members and guests that day to celebrate our 50th anniversary,” Maffioli says.

“I wasn’t thinking about it too much until the RCGA phoned and said, ‘Hey, it’s your 50th anniversary; we want to send you a plaque for 50 years,” explains Maffioli with a laugh.

The club will also be holding the Christina Lake Men’s Open, which runs from June 16 to 17.
