In a soccer match, a corner kick can be a move that gives a team a great scoring chance if it’s executed properly.

The idea of a corner kick is to loft the ball into a strategic position in front of the goal, where a teammate can either direct the ball into the net by heading the ball or kicking it in out of mid air.

Nathan McKenny, a 14-year-old Grand Forks soccer player in the Boundary Youth Soccer Association, described two different corner kick techniques.

“There are really two ways for a corner kick, if you want (the ball) to go straight and powerful, you kick it in the centre with your (shoe) laces said McKenny. “Or there is another way (where) the ball curves in towards the goal for a person to head it, to do that you hit (the ball) with the corner of your foot.”

Fellow teammate, Sandon Dribney, said if you are good at taking corner kicks, you could curl the ball in directly towards the net.

McKenny told the Gazette that he scored a goal once off of a corner kick, which is something not many soccer players can say they have done.

The goalie kind of fumbled it in, he said, but he counts it as a corner kick goal.
