Grand Forks Black Betty’s managed to overcome the Kelowna Ice Dragons after a shaky start in this weekend’s home tournament.

Donned in bright yellow, the Ice Dragons kept the Black Betty’s at bay in their own turf for much of the first period.

The Ice Dragons drew first blood nearly 10 minutes into the game to lead in the scoreboard.

Goalie Christine Venus for the Black Betty’s managed to block a close call minutes later and kept the rebound.

With less then three minutes in the first period, the visiting team scored again, leading 2-0 into the next period.

The Ice Dragons dominated much of the first but the Black Betty’s came back recharged to score three minutes into the second period.

Black Betty’s continued to pressure the visiting team resulting in second goal minutes later.

From there it was a tense back and forth venture for both teams as they each attempted to get the upper hand.

With six minutes left to the game, the Black Betty’s took it home with a third goal to end the game 3-2.

“Katie Spark has been our coach-player for the past three years,” said Lilly Bryant,  “The coaching definitely paid off with the performance of both ladies teams over the weekend during our home tournament.”

This weekend’s tournament had two teams from Grand Forks, the White Betty’s and the Black Betty’s, and visiting teams the Kelowna Ice Dragons, Nelson Thorman Drillers and the Trail Smokettes.

In the men’s tournament, Osoyoos defeated the Grand Forks Black Bulls 4-2.

The Black Betty’s have over 25 ladies who practice on Thursday evenings in the Grand Forks arena.
