A total of 26,051 teachers, 89 per cent of those who voted, voted yes in a province-wide vote conducted on March 4-6.“With this vote, B.C. teachers have sent a very clear message to the B.C. government; it’s time to negotiate in good faith, take back the unreasonable proposals, and offer teachers a fair deal that also provides better support for students,” said BCTF President Jim Iker in a press release.Iker stressed that there is no immediate job action planned by the BCTF.Norm Sabourin, president of the Boundary District Teacher’s Association, said the union hopes that the strike vote will send a message to the government.“We got a good strike vote. The goal now is not to have to use it. We don’t want to take job action,” he said. “The goal is right now to have the strike vote put pressure on the bargaining table. Hopefully, that’s as far as we have to go. But if, at that bargaining table, the government doesn’t want to treat us fairly – if they don’t want to bargain in good faith – then we may decide to take some form of job action.”
