A special avalanche warning has been issued by Avalanche Canada for areas of the Kootenay Boundary.

The warning, which came from the non-governmental body “dedicated to public avalanche safety” yesterday, includes locations such as Nelson, Trail and Salmo. Grand Forks is not included in the warning, although Christina Lake and Cascade are just within the affected area.

The warning applies to “recreational back country” users and is in effect from today until Monday.

The warning also includes Waterton Lakes National Park and the South Rockies.

“Clearing skies and good riding conditions after a long drought are expected to entice people into the mountains,” explains James Floyer, Forecasting Program Supervisor for Avalanche Canada in a press release. “While natural avalanches are tapering off, we’re concerned that human triggering of large avalanches remains possible throughout the weekend.”

According to the press release, Avalanche Canada and Parks Canada are recommending backcountry users without avalanche training avoid the affected terrain while avalanche warnings are in effect and exercise caution in all backcountry environments.
