VIEW FROM THE PULPIT: God's plumbline along our lives lined up

God is continually placing his plumbline alongside our lives to see if our lives are lining up to his standards.

God is continually placing his plumbline alongside our lives to see if our lives are lining up to his standards, his truths, his values and his principles.

The degree with which our lives are out of line with his standards reflects the degree of insecurity we feel when things go wrong in our lives.

People all over the world are asking, “What is life and how should I live it?” Many are struggling with identity and destiny. They are wondering, “Who am I and how should I live my life?”

What is the meaning of life? When you and I build our personality on a standard or value system other than God’s, we have trouble knowing who we are, what is life and how should we live it.

Understanding the Biblical worldview will help you understand who you are (identity) and how you shall live (destiny).

For us to understand who we are, we need to get to know God. Why do I say that? Because the scriptures say, we are made in God’s image and likeness. We are like Him.

In Jeremiah 1:5 God says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you …”

We came from God!

We were wanted and loved by him, no matter what the circumstances were in regards to our conception. If we believe our birth was a mistake, it will affect our personality.

We will begin to feel unwanted, unloved, unworthy and unacceptable. We must believe we came from God.

We are no mistake!

We also must believe that God has a destiny for us. If I believe I am who God says I am, that I am loved and accepted, I will live my life according to what I believe.

On the other hand, if I believe I am stupid, unloved, unwanted, unworthy, a mistake, I too will live my life accordingly.

Each one of us also has an innate desire to have direction and purpose in life. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God has a good plan with a good future for each one of us. When we walk in His ways, we will have direction and purpose in our lives.

Knowing who we are and where we are going will give us security as we walk through this life.

In John 13:3-5 we see how Jesus washed the disciple’s feet just prior to his crucifixion. Jesus knew who he was. He knew that he came from God the Father and he knew that he was going back to him, so he did not mind lowering himself to the position of the lowest slave.

He didn’t mind washing his disciple’s feet because he knew who he was. What he did didn’t bring him security or insecurity, but what brought him security was knowing who he was. He didn’t care if someone mistook him for a common slave. He knew who he was!

How about you?

Do you know where you came from and where you are going? The Bible has much to say about this!
