OUR VIEW MAY 8: Don't put off 2013 B.C. election voting 'til last minute; use advance polls

Avoid the throng of covers and the long lines, take advantage of advance polling in the 2013 B.C. election.

The candidates for the Boundary-Similkameen riding have taken part in various all-candidate meetings in the area and have issued statements on what they believe in.

The various party leaders have debated on TV and have been interviewed by numerous media outlets across the province.

They probably could continue to do so for another month but that is not the case as campaigning will be wrapping up, as well as all the other politicking that comes along with an election.

Starting yesterday, early polling stations opened and in Grand Forks, electors are now able to get a jump on the action at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church – advance polling will be available until May 11 and the church will be open between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

General Voting Day is May 14.

Political parties won’t be changing their tune until after the election (HST anyone?) and they will only be re-iterating what they’ve said already, so take advantage of the ability to vote early – it’s your right and it’s better to get it out of the way.

People are often accused of putting things off until the last minute but don’t do that when it comes to voting in this provincial election.

This isn’t a case of the “earlybird getting the worm” but it is a case of “the earlier, the better.”

While there will be more stations on May 14 besides Sacred Heart – gallery 2, Christina Lake Community Hall and Gospel Chapel – there will also be more people getting out to vote, as that will be the last day to vote and all stations will be packed.

Taking advantage of advancing polls will allow you to avoid the big crowds and will also provide peace of mind, as you will have completed your provincial duty and won’t have to worry on May 14.

Voters might think that there will be enough time to go to the stations on their lunch breaks or before work on May 14 but so will a number of other people.

If you do vote on May 14, make sure you have proper identification and go to the right station as indicated on the yellow voters card.
