OUR VIEW AUG. 14: Grand Forks residents living in a fun zone

Kudos to the City of Grand Forks and the many organizers of events for adding some spice and zest into life in Grand Forks.

Kudos to the City of Grand Forks and the many organizers of events for adding some spice and zest into life in Grand Forks.

Last Friday was the Back to the Wild West event put on by the Grand Forks Downtown Business Association and it was both a great idea and fun as well.

The wild west was the theme, Market Avenue was closed off to allow for a street party and there was street hockey and performances by many people and groups.

The best part of the day was when bandits on horseback, the Redneck Mother’s Gang – Texas Toni Long, Stormy The Kid, Quick Draw Kristin and the Outlaw Becky Wales – staged a “daring heist” by “robbing” the CIBC at Second Street and Market Avenue.

A picture of the staged heist posted on the Grand Forks Gazette Facebook page drew many comments and even more views.

There won’t be any robberies this week (at least we hope not) but there will be a classic car show-and-shine event at City Park on Sunday, the Park In The Park car show.

Market Avenue will be closed off according to city officials and vendors from the Farmers’ Market will be selling their wares.

The Airport Appreciation Day Fly-In event and fall fair take place the weekend of Aug. 24.

The city’s beautification plan has been lauded and criticized but all the benches, flowers and even the new trash receptacles in the downtown core add to the festive atmosphere, believe it or not.

It’s not easy to organize an event or run a city, as it takes a lot of work and it seems as if there are always complaints, but all the various shows and fairs give people something to do and adds colour to the area.

People sometimes complain that there is nothing to do in places like Grand Forks and Christina Lake but people like that are wrong.

Vancouver, a big city, has been accused of being a “no fun zone” but with lively, fake robberies and all the events taking place here, you can’t make the same accusations of this area.
