Re: City talks about garbage rates (story, Nov. 14 issue of the Grand Forks Gazette)

I read a few issues ago about the concerns of Dave Milton regarding garbage rates.

I agree that it is not fair to penalize people who are going the extra mile to reduce garbage to the landfill.

If you are charged extra (penalized) for putting out extra garbage, you should get credit for putting out less garbage.

I believe the regional district has a wonderful system, where you buy a sheet of tags and use them as needed.

In our case, I put out one per month.

In the future, when it comes to water meters, the same should apply. If you get charged extra for using too much water, then you should get credit for conserving and using less.

Should city council be proactive in helping support conservation or does it come down to the regional district co-ordinator dictating policy?

If a homeowner has no incentive to conserve, then why recycle?

Throw it all in the garbage and let the city sort it out. You are paying for it anyway.
