LETTER: Truth and fiction about the HST

Some of the seniors in Grand Forks have misconceptions about the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

Editor:

I didn’t intend on writing another HST letter but after having heard what some of our seniors believe to be true versus what actually is true, I couldn’t remain silent.

Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals say they are prepared to cut two per cent off of the 12 per cent HST that we are currently paying, which “should” bring the HST down to 10 per cent.

Did you know that the Liberals will only honour this promise IF and when the economy dictates that it can?

It won’t be happening anytime soon and it’s interesting how many people don’t know that fact but then again that information is hidden in the fine print.

Did you know that not everyone will be getting a rebate of $175 and that in order to get this rebate, you have to qualify to receive it?  So, we have to meet “Liberal criteria” in order to get our own money back?

Wow, let’s add discrimination to their list of accomplishments.

I don’t know what’s worse, being bribed in exchange for a vote OR the fact that some people are going to be discriminated against, thereby not being able to receive a rebate at all.

And it gets better.

Did you know that the $175 HST rebate is a ONE-time thing?

Most people do but unfortunately some of our seniors have been led to believe that if and when the Liberals give out those rebates, this will be the start of $175 rebate every three months. Their belief is that it will replace whatever their old GST rebates were and that is false.

For those of you who don’t really care about the HST debate, think of your parents and/or your grandparents.

How would you feel if you knew someone was lying to them when they were at their most vulnerable?

Misleading the elder population is one of the most appalling tactics I’ve ever seen.
