Letter: Return of ex-mayor?

Editor:

So it seems that Mr. Krog is starting early on his campaign to return to city council.

Mr. Krog says that the $76,000 in “grant-in-aid” will mean a five per cent increase on our taxes. Now he is calling for a referendum that will cost $75,000, therefore another five per cent increase in our taxes. It should not surprise us that he wants to spend that money since for the three years that he was mayor, we had the biggest tax increase in this town and the biggest cost increase on our services, such as water, sewer and garbage.

If Mr. Krog had not picked a fight with the Boundary Museum Society, the museum would still be a local, not an out of town organization as mentioned in his letter. However, we should remember that it is still our museum. I remember when he was mayor. A large amount of money was given to Phoenix Ski Hill which is really out of town.

As to the city council contemplating the purchase of Golden Heights, at least council went to the taxpayers before spending the money, unlike the previous council that spent twice as much on the court house without consulting the taxpayers.

As far as $30,000 to an organization within the city, it should be noted that the art gallery already receives $120,000 a year and the $30,000 is extra, that was never included in the original agreement between the city and the art gallery. The taxpayers have already been paying for the extra $30,000. Now since our credit union has given the art gallery $30,000, I hope city council can go back to the business of running the city.
