Letter: Description undermines respect

Would this same description be applied to, say, “25 lovely men” and their achievements? I think not, says Phillips.

While it was a welcome sight to see the photo of women in the Boundary being acknowledged by the Boundary Women’s Coalition for their outstanding achievements (Women honoured – Grand Forks Gazette, Nov. 12), I was taken aback by the caption patronizingly describing them as “25 lovely ladies.”

Such a description, regardless of the writer’s gender, is typical of the male dominated society and conditioning we live in, and basically undermines real respect for women’s work and their striving for equality in this very much unequal world.

Would this same description be applied to, say, “25 lovely men” and their achievements? I think not!
