LETTER: Befriending bullies

While it’s admirable that there is a campaign against bullying, I feel there are certain aspects that are not being considered.

Editor:

While it’s admirable that there is a campaign against bullying, I feel there are certain aspects that are not being taken into consideration.

As a short thin guy, growing up in Vancouver, never admitting I was a Doukhobor,  always taking the opposite side in Cold War discussions, I was subjected to constant bullying.

Elementary school recess often involved a tall army cadet lifting me up, while another one punched me in the stomach.

But I never cracked, which won their respect, so I soon  became best friends with the guy doing the punching.

Let’s face it; bullying has always been an integral aspect of all societies – animal and human. On the job, in parliament, and internationally, bullying is still believed to be the way to get things done.

The best way to deal with bullying is what I’d call the Doukhobor way – whether on the road, at work, or in school – smile, let the insults slide by you and be ready to help if needed.

Don’t let a couple of harsh words destroy your equilibrium. Peace,

Peter N. Hlookoff, Grand Forks
