JAN. 9 LETTER: Ratepayer group for Grand Forks

Re: City councillors and their 2011 election promises (column, Dec. 26 issue of the Gazette)

After reading the comments by Mr. Ronaghan in the Dec. 26 issue, I would suggest that what Grand Forks needs is a ratepayers’ association.

Ratepayer groups work very well by keeping councils on their toes.

Why for example, would council authorize the waste of city funds to hire a consultant to report on city streets? Is there no member of council capable of observing the condition of our streets?

Why would the works department comment on the cracks in the slag pile when Mr. (Tim) Spurgeon (of Pacific Abrasives) says they have been there as long as his company has been working there?

According to an article in the local paper of the day, the city put up the fence and signs to absolve the city of legal responsibility if someone fell off the edge.

Councils are elected to manage the affairs of areas they represent. There has not been much sign of this happening.
