Walter was born on February 11, 1934 at Grand Forks. He passed away suddenly on January 01, 2012, at Grand Forks at the age of 77.
He is predeceased by his parents and his wife Mary (2004). He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Deborah Hrooshkin; son Lorne (Debbie) Soobotin; brothers, George Soobotin and Charles (Joyce) Soobitin; sisters, Zena Nevokshonoff and Polly (Paul) Pereverzoff; grandsons: Kelly and Rick Soobotin, and Michael, Jesse and Kyle Hrooshkin; his great-grandchildren; as well as his special friend, Gretta.
Walter was a long-time employee of Pope & Talbot. He was interested and enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering in his workshop. He was the neighbourhood handyman. If you couldn’t fix it, you gave it to Walter and he usually would have it repaired for you. He was well known for his friendly, kind and gentle spirit. He was always ready to greet summer tubers or swimmers who got off or onto the river at the well-known spot called “Soobotin’s corner”. He was a thoughtful and generous man who always would have someone stopping by to visit with him. It was not uncommon to have a yard full of family and friends surrounding this loving man.
We are deeply saddened by his sudden passing and he will be greatly missed by all who loved him. A celebration of life will take place at his home by the river. An announcement will be made at a later date. No service by request. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.
A special thank you to family, friends, neighbours and coworkers for your phone calls, visits, food contributions, flowers and words of compassion at the sudden death of our father and grandfather. Also a special thanks to the doctors, nurses and ambulance attendants who had cared for Walter when he was recently hospitalized prior to his passing. Grand Forks Funeral Home was in care of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donation in memory of Walter may be made to a charity of your choice.
