August 10, 1927 – August 13, 2011

It is with profound sadness that our family has lost an incredible husband, father and grandfather. Terence Arthur Smith passed away at Mariposa Care Centre in Osoyoos, B.C., on Saturday, August 13, 2011.

Terry is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, James (Mary); daughters: Susan, Sam (Gunnar) and Cindy (Brent); stepsons, Dan and Larry Corfe; sister, Sally Garrard; and numerous grandchildren. Terry was predeceased by his first wife, Joan; son, Patrick; daughter, Theresa and stepson, Sam Corfe.

Terry came to Rock Creek as a young man, married his first wife, Joan Harpur and remained in the Kettle Valley, where they raised their family of six children. In 1989, he married Barbara Corfe.

He worked for the Department of Highways as a graderman for a number of years and in true, independent fashion, joined an ambitious group to start the Borderline Ski Area in Bridesville in the late 60’s. This venture lead them to bigger slopes and better snow at the Mount Baldy Ski Area. The years on Baldy created countless long lasting friendships and memories. In the late 70s and early 80s, Terry worked as suppression crew foreman for the B.C. Forest Service in Kettle Valley.

Not to let a new opportunity slip by, he helped and encouraged his family to purchase the Rock Creek General Store in 1984 where he continued with his fatherly guidance and input until the family sold the business in 2008. Over the years, Terry shared his time with School District #13 as a trustee, local committee chair for the 1958 BC Centennial, a charter member of the Kettle River Elks Lodge and spent many days helping build the Rock Creek Fall Fair Association.

Members of the family would like to thank and extend their gratitude to friends and members of the community for the supportive and caring wishes during this difficult time. Dad has left a void in our lives that will be filled by the love he has left in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, #104 – 35 Westminster Ave., Penticton, B.C., V2A 1H7.
