In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts to share our news of the sudden but peaceful passing of our husband, father & grandfather Steve William Babakaiff at Hardy View Lodge on Thursday, March 17, 2022.
Steve was born on November 23,1943 to William and Alice Babakaiff in Grand Forks. He often told people that he was found in July Creek above Spencer Hill, it flowed where he grew up.
He was employed as an Administrator/Accountant at the USCC and Sion Improvement District for many years. He was extremely active throughout his life and very proud of his community & served on many committees. He was a member of the Rotary Club, serving two terms as President and became an honorary member. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Independent Order of Foresters, Director on the Hospital Board, involved in introducing Russian news and programs to CKGF Radio. He served as the only member from B.C. on the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism of 100 members throughout Canada. He was involved in the first official opening of the Grand Forks airport and served on the Association of B.C. Irrigation District receiving several awards.
Steve is survived by his loving wife Nina of 50 years, their children Gail (Kevin) Horne, Candice (Matt), Chris (Kaylin), grandchildren Kayleigh and Kolby Horne and Rayne Babakaiff , brother Bill, sister in-law Molly, several nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was predeceased by his mother, Alice (Strelaeff) in 1980, father William in 1986 and brother Edward in 2017.
A huge thank-you to the; doctors, nurses, caregivers, homecare, both in the hospital acute department and in Hardy View Lodge for their kindness and compassionate care, the service and compassion provided by Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Services & Crematorium of Oliver B.C. Steve often called Oliver his second home. Thank-you to the gravediggers for preparing Steve's final resting place.
Words cannot express our gratitude to our extended family, relatives, neighbors, phone calls, food, flowers and for all the support, kindness and love that we received.
Steve will be truly and deeply missed by his family and forever remembered for all his good deeds and everything he stood for.
There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
God Rest His Soul!!
