Peter was born on November 3, 1925, to John and Nellie Hlookoff at Grand Forks, B.C. He was the eldest of four children – Fred, John and Helen. Peter attended the Fructova School for a short time and then helped on the family farm. The family lived on top of Spencer Hill that became known as the Hlookoff Village. Peter’s mother past away suddenly when the children were young. Later when Peter’s father remarried, he gained a stepsister and later a half-brother Harry, and two half sisters, Alice and Victoria.
As a young teen Peter enjoyed playing his guitar and singing with his brothers and many young people in the area. He went to work in the Okanagan orchards. On May 11, 1947, Peter was united in marriage to Marina Soukourkoff at Grand Forks where they made their home and had three children: Paul, Andy and Rita. Peter worked in the forestry industry for many years and his first job was horse logging. He retired early and loved to go camping, fishing and work in his garden.
At Boundary Hospital on September 10, 2012, at the age of 86, with family at his side Peter slipped into God’s hands.
Peter was predeceased by his wife, Marina (2004); son, Paul (2003); mother, Nellie; father, John; stepmother, Helen; brothers: John, Fred and Harry; and sister, Alice.
Peter is survived by his son. Andy of Grand Forks; daughter, Rita (Phil) of Grand Forks; grandchildren: Jauna and husband Bruce, Jennifer, Jeremy, Colby, Jamie and Tracy; great-grandchildren: Ariel, Kyler, Bianca, Stephen, Halayna, Ryan and Jacob; great-great-grandson, Joshawa; sister, Vicky (Harry) Lebedoff of Castlegar; sister ,Helen (Alan) Kinakin of Kelowna; sister-in-law, Luba Hlookoff; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 15, 2012, at the USCC Community Center with burial to follow in the USCC Sion Doukhobor Cemetery, Grand Forks. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Everett Baker of Grand Forks Funeral Home.
