June 9, 1938 - January 10, 2025

In loving memory ~

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Peter Floyd Strettan, who departed this life on January 10, 2025, at the age of 86.

Peter was born on June 9, 1938, in Vancouver, BC, an only child to Agnes and Floyd Strettan. He was raised in Powell River, where his love for learning and community first took root. He pursued higher education at the University of British Columbia, where he met and married the love of his life, and wife of 63 years, Sharon. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and returned to UBC later in life to attain a Masters of Education.

Peter dedicated his life to education, shaping countless young minds throughout British Columbia. He began his teaching career in Sointula, then moved on to Canal Flats and New Denver. As he advanced in his career, he took on leadership roles as Vice Principal in Vanderhoof and Principal in Campbell River. His passion for education and unwavering commitment to students led him to serve as Superintendent in both Burns Lake and Prince Rupert. A dedicated basketball coach for many years and a Rotarian in both Vanderhoof and Prince Rupert, Peter always found ways to give back. After decades of service, Peter retired in 1995, leaving behind a lasting impact on the communities he served.

Upon retiring, Peter and his beloved wife, Sharon, moved to Christina Lake, where they owned and operated the Lakeview Motel for five years. Never one to slow down, Peter became an integral part of the community, serving as Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, leading a committee to improve local trails, participating in Citizens on Patrol, and advocating for seniors housing in the area. Peter was passionate about sports, particularly basketball, loved jogging, biking and cross-country skiing. He enjoyed spending time with life-long friends as well as his close-knit friends in the Zonin group. He loved poetry, problem-solving, good music and dogs. Above all, Peter's greatest love was for his family. He adored his wife, his children and grandchildren, and cherished every moment spent with them.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Sharon, devoted daughters, Kelly (Rob), Toni (Cal), Tracey (Ken, predeceased), and Nicole (Bryan), as well as his 10 grandchildren - Crystal, Daryk, Kylee, Darrell, Trevor, Devan, Mira, Isabel, Ty, and Neysa, and his seven great-grandchildren.

Peter touched countless lives. His wisdom, warmth, humour, generosity, and unwavering love and support for his family, friends, and community will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Society or to a charity of your choice.
