Marthe Marchal, of Grand Forks, BC, died peacefully on Jan. 27, 2015 at Hardy View Lodge, age 86. Marthe was born July 29, 1928 in France, and came to Québec in 1951 with her husband François and daughter Mimi. The family moved to Courtenay, B.C. in 1964, and to Grand Forks in 1967. She was predeceased by her husband François and son Antoine. She is survived by her brother Alphonse Molter and her sister Marie Bellavance; by her daughters Mimi Marchal (David), Anne Marchal (late Marcel), Claire Radcliffe (Len), Françoise Carmen (late Marten), Brigitte McCabe and Isabelle Ryder (Eric); and by her sons Dominique (Evelyn), Paul, Jean (Kathy) and Pierre. She also has 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Marthe had a passion for supporting the poor in Central America, where she had two foster children. She travelled to Guatemala with CUSO and Nicaragua with Development and Peace to help people in remote villages. She became chairperson for D&P in the Kamloops diocese, and continued to speak and travel in that capacity until she became afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease. She continued to enjoy working in her large garden and spending time with her family; her long daily walks were very important to her too. The Marchal family would like to thank the staff at Hardy View for the wonderful care they provided for Marthe, and for their kindness and thoughtfulness over the last few weeks. A funeral Mass was held on Friday, January 30, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Doctors Without Borders or to Development and Peace.
