KARIN PAUL

June 19, 2014

My wife and partner of 37 years passed away quietly in her sleep early in the morning of Thursday, 19-June-2014, after a brief encounter with cancer. Karin Paul (Froese) was born on November 1st, 1942 in Lauck, East Prussia; an area that is now part of Poland. In 1945 Karin and her family fled to West Germany, ahead of the advancing Russian Army. In December 1951 Karin’s family immigrated to Canada, settling in the Fraser Valley. In 1961 Karin graduated from Chilliwack Senior Secondary School, but she returned to do Grade 13 before starting nurse’s training at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1965. In 1967 she married Tony Paul and gave birth to Leonard Paul in January 1973. In 1974 she left Tony and Vancouver, moving first to Saltspring Island and then Victoria. In 1976 she met George Longden and in 1977 they formed a contractual partnership, which exists to this day. In 1978 they moved to Campbell River, where Karin worked in the hospital as a registered nurse and in the school system where she worked as an Educational Aide. In 1988 they moved to Grand Forks and started farming, and both worked to support their farming habit. Karin has always been very creative, expressing her artistic side in clothing that she sewed or knit or crocheted, then in pottery and ceramics and more recently in stained glass. Karin has also been an avid gardener. In Grand Forks Karin has always had a huge garden producing such abundance that large amounts of home canned produce was always in demand when we visited our children and grand children in the lower mainland. Spirituality has been a major life goal for Karin, from her teenage years to the present. It has manifested itself throughout her life: in the continual search for answers to life’s bigger questions as well as through her hospice work, both here and in other communities. Karin lived her life to the fullest, embracing all that life has to offer. We have had 37 wonderful years together and I shall miss her greatly. A private celebration of her life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Phoenix Foundation in her name.
