James Robert Matthews

"Jim" "Dad" "Gpa"

December 15, 1940 – January 2, 2017

As we announce the passing of Dad (Jim) we bring to life the story of a great Son, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother and Uncle.

Dad was born in Trail, BC. His family relocated a few years later to Grand Forks where Dad completed all his schooling. In his teen years Dad was a member of the boxing club and remained an avid fan of the sport.

Dad was dedicated to his career as a power lineman. He began his career with West Kootenay Power, later moving on to BC Hydro and hydro construction. His travels eventually took him to Terrace, BC (1966) where he met and married Helen (Dempster). They enjoyed 18 years of marriage and remained good friends for the rest of his days. He built lines from Mexico to Alaska and many places in between. Almost every line in BC has his input one way or another. He was one of the most respected linemen and worked until the age of 75 years. He received his 50 year pin from IBEW Local 258 in 2016.

Dad also had a love for driving his truck (or cars back in the day of great cars) and riding his motorbike(s). He would often drive/ride for hours just to stop by and say hello. He would not hesitate to drive from Abbotsford to Hope just for breakfast. During his years he made many wonderful lifelong friends all over North America. I always teased him that he could not stay in one place too long because he did not want any moss growing on him. My whole life Dad would come and go as the lines called him but I always knew he would return.

Left to remember Dad are daughters Lanine Matthews and Kimberly Klok (Steve), grandchildren Michael Matthews, Matthew Klok, Lukas Klok, Jonah Klok and Sarah Klok, great granddaughter Samarah Matthews. He was their special Gpa (“G” for short). Also survived by sisters Karen Kirk (Bruce), Norma Wilkinson (Bill), Yvonne Subotin (John), brother David Matthews (Cathy), special Aunt Donna Greenwood plus many nieces and nephews. As well as special friends Helen Matthews and Melvin Loewen, brothers-in-law Gerry and Reg Dempster.

Predeceased by parents David and Helen Matthews, brother Dick Matthews (and Faye), sister Carol Bouchard (Lou) and nephew Cody Subotin.

Dad is resting now in Grand Forks, BC near his beloved Ma. He was laid to rest on January 13, 2017. We plan to have a Celebration of Life in Grand Forks on May 21, 2017.

Until we meet again Dad.......love your daughter Kimberly.
