J. W. (Bill) Vanderburgh died at home January 27, 2011. He was born at Crows Nest, B.C., to parents William Charles Vanderburgh and Cevilla Kathlene Metzler. Bill had two sisters, Cevie and Lois, and a brother Bob. His father worked for the CPR, and the family moved many times before settling at Oliver, B.C.

It was in the Okanagan that Bill first worked for the CPR and met his wife-to-be, Merle Alice Heavysides. Bill would work for the CPR for 39 years before retiring, and then starting his second great career at Pacific Abrasives.

Bill is survived by his wife, Merle; sisters, mother-in-law, Thelma; brother-in-law, Carl (Barb); and sister-in-law, Leslie and family. He is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bill and Merle started their family in Brookmere, B.C., with the birth of three daughters: Lori (Lorne), Lynn (Gordon) and Leigh (James). The family moved next to Midway and finally Grand Forks. Bill was the proud grandpa of six grandchildren: Jillian, Morgan, Breana, Lauren, Nicole and Shane, and soon-to-be great-grandpa this April.

Throughout his life Bill made many lifelong friends because of his easy going manner, sense of humor, love of the outdoors (camping and fishing), and trains, trains, trains!

In the last months of Bill’s life, it was his wonderful friends, recent and long-standing who kept his spirits up. Also, all the homecare workers and nurses were much appreciated for being so helpful and caring and brightening his day.

Bill has requested there be no service. There will be a reception for family and friends to be announced at a later date. The family will also meet for an interment of the ashes. Grand Forks Funeral Home was in care of arrangements.
