1948 to 2012

On May 22, 2012, at age 64, David died peacefully at Boundary Hospital with his loving and caring wife, Susan Blair at his side. David will be deeply missed by son, Dustin and daughter, Adrienne as well as by his many friends and relatives. He is survived by his sisters, Donna and Debbie and brothers, Hob and Greg.

David was born at Akron, Ohio, grew up in Batesville, Indiana, and moved to Canada as a young man. After spending a brief time in Toronto, David moved to the Lower Mainland, where he met Susan. In 1977, David and Susan settled in Grand Forks as founding members of Thimble Mountain Cooperative Farm. He remained a committed and integral member of the co-op over these many years. David, a retired CUPE Local 2254 member, was employed at the Grand Forks Arena for many years. As well, he was an active member of the community where he served on both the library and art gallery boards and was a co-founder of the No Boundaries Film Festival. Also, David was actively involved in Rivers’ Edge Theatre Company.

David was wholly committed to Susan, Dustin and Adrienne and he expressed this daily in his words and deeds.

David’s love of British Columbia was evident in his enjoyment of many outdoor activities including hiking, climbing, skiing, kayaking, sailing, cycling, camping, canoeing and gardening though his passion was hiking and climbing in the high country. David was an accomplished carpenter and cabinet maker; he built his family’s home at TMCF and assisted in the construction of friends’ homes in the area.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the many friends in Grand Forks and Point Roberts, WA, who provided overwhelming support for David and Susan and helped with David’s care throughout the last nineteen months. As well, the family would like to express gratitude to the medical staff at Boundary Hospital and Kelowna General Hospital for their dedication to David’s well-being.

There will be a celebration of David’s life on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Hutton School gymnasium, 2575 - 75th Avenue, Grand Forks, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Grand Forks Palliative Care, c/o Boundary Hospital, Box 2647, Grand Forks, B.C., V0H-1H0, or Friends of the Library, c/o Grand Forks Public Library, Box 1539, Grand Forks, B.C., V0H-1H0.
