January 23, 1930 - April 30, 2019
Benjamin Schmidt, 89 years old, passed away at Hardy View Lodge, in Grand Forks, BC, on April 30, 2019.
Ben was born in Hochfield, Manitoba on January 23, 1930. He married Helena Dyck on March 26, 1951. He taught school in Salmon Valley (North of Prince George) for 1 year; then moved to Grand Forks Elementary School in 1951. He was hired because he could read music, play guitar and be a Music Teacher. Over several summers he obtained a Bachelor of Education degree from UBC, and later a master's in administration from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. Later he was principal of Hutton A. Elementary School, until June, 1985. Ben and Helena then traveled to many countries visiting and helping different mission agencies. April 1995 they retired to Jewel Lake, to live in an A-frame cabin which Ben had designed. When shoveling snow became too difficult, they moved to Oliver, BC for 9 years, followed by 9 years in Midway, BC.
Ben's passion was knowing God, serving God and leading Bible studies. His strongest skills were in teaching and administration. He also enjoyed fishing, hiking, playing games with the family, studying history and visiting historical sites. He loved music, especially singing in quartets. Ben had a servant heart, helping wherever needed. He was one of the founding members of Pines Bible Camp.
Ben is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helena; 5 children - Peggy (Laurence Epp), Len (Jean), Rowland (Esther), Christine (Mark Danyluk), Carolyn (Noel Knapp), 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; also, one sister and 3 brothers.
The family gives special thanks to the staff at Hardy View Lodge for their exceptional love and care.
