June 2, 1931 - December 14, 2024
In loving memory ~
We are sad to announce the sudden passing of our beloved Mother, Baba and Babushka Phyllis Gritchen on December 14, 2024 at Kelowna General Hospital. Mom passed away peacefully with family by her side.
She was born June 2, 1931 to Nick and Florence Makortoff and was the oldest of 5 sisters Maureen, Susan, Verna and Helen and 1 brother Paul. She was born and raised in the Makortoff Village on Hardy Mountain. She dearly loved her homestead and was so proud to be a Makortoff Girl.
She met our Dad George in 1953 and they married in 1954. Together they raised 4 children Gary, Kathy, Lorraine and Jim on their vegetable farm in Almond Gardens.
Mom was a lifelong USCC member, an amazing cook and headed the Ladies Cooking Group for over 20 years preparing and serving our Russian cuisine for events such as Cops for Kids Bike Ride, GFSS graduation fundraisers, Christmas meals, funerals, weddings and more.
More than anything she loved being a Baba. She leaves behind 10 grand children and 18 great grand children.
She lost her eldest son, our brother Gary in 2008 and her husband, our Dad George in 2013. Mom leaves behind 3 children Kathy, Lorraine, Jim (Lila), her brother Paul (Marlene), and brother in laws Bill Koftinoff and John Chernoff.
Her funeral service will be Saturday December 28th at 10 a.m. at USCC Centre. There will also be an evening service on Friday December 27th at 6 p.m.
May you rest in heavenly beauty and peace our beautiful Mama. We love you and will miss you forever.
