November 4, 1931 - March 17, 2025
Our dear mom and grandma Alice passed away peacefully at the age of 93. She is survived by her children, Shelley Moritz of Kamloops BC, Douglas (Tracy Rush) of Castlegar BC, Diane (Vonne) Bergstrand of Heffley Creek BC, Gordon (Janet) of Fort McMurray AB, and Nancy (Art) Curtis of Pender Island BC. She had 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband John (Jack) Hammond who passed away in Nov 2012.
Alice was born in Grand Forks, BC to Annie & John Skilling and was the seventh of eight children. She remained in Grand Forks and married Jack in Sept 1950 where they raised their children. The family then moved to Kamloops, BC in 1973. Alice worked for the Thompson Nicola Library System from 1974 to 1991 spending most of her career at the North Kamloops Library.
After retirement Alice was an active volunteer. She organized canvassers to collect for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society. Both her and Jack did Meals on Wheels and played cards weekly with the residents at Overlander Residential Care. Also, while at Overlander she organized their library and cared for the plant room. While living at Cottonwood Manor in her later years, she maintained their library and organized the annual book sales. She loved to see new places and appreciated nature, travelling to Australia, visiting Vancouver Island, Alberta & Saskatchewan, made multiple trips to the Yukon & Alaska and did bus trips with Jack. Alice spent her last two years at the Residence where she was an avid cribbage and rummy player.
There will be no service at this time. The family will gather in Grand Forks, BC in the summer for the interment of her ashes.
A special thank you to the staff of Kamloops Hospice for their care and compassion during her stay at Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home and for their kindness to Alice and her family.
