What is it?

Mercer Celgar’s pulp mill water treatment system produces an optimal soil amendment product (Celgrow) for pasture land and grass growth. It contains wood fibres and a surplus of bacteria from the biological wastewater treatment facility. Celgrow is non-toxic and has low metal and chlorinated organic material content.

The wood fibre content provides a ready source of carbon and good moisture retention properties while the bacteria content provides a ready source of nutrients for enhanced plant growth. In addition, Celgrow contains a balanced concentration of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, micro-nutrients and a carbon-nitrogen ratio of 27:1.

The pH of the residuals is effectively neutral, varying in the 6 to 8 range. The heavy metal concentrations found in the residuals originate from the wood chips used for pulp production and these levels are similar to the natural metal concentration levels in the natural soils of the regional forests.

What are the optimal application sites?

- Rural properties for hay/grass production

- Pastures

- Animal pasture productivity improvements

- Forest fertilization programs

- Site reclamations

- Forest stands

- Slope stabilization through promoting vegetation growth

Ideal land applications would be 2 or more acres with enough room to accommodate at least 6 truck loads.

Soil testing is performed on the landowners site and must meet the provincial government’s Code of Practice for Soil Amendments (COPSA) guidelines.

What does it cost?

Mercer Celgar will cover the cost of a Qualified Professional performing soil sampling and obtaining government authorization for your application on your behalf.

Shipping costs to your property will be shared costs between the landowner and Celgar.

Landowners are responsible for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil and for any seeding costs required to achieve their enhanced plant growth objectives.
