Year ends but dispute does not

The school year ended a week and a half early this year as the province and the teacher's union were unable to agree on a new contract.

The last day of the school year had a picket line in front of all of the schools in the district.

The school year ended with no contract in place for the teachers union. Boundary District Teachers’ Association President Norm Sabourin said School District 51 (Boundary) has no summer school or year-round programming. “As of right now we have no intention of picketing,” said Sabourin. “We still have the right to demonstrate and we are still hoping for a settlement. In some districts they have chosen to picket school board offices and different school sites. We could decide to go that direction later to add pressure to the equation.”

Administration officials were involved with negotiation of local issues with the CUPE support workers at press time and were not available for comment on the ongoing BCTF negotiations.
