RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services says that inattentive driving was a factor in an accident involving an RCMP truck and a Toyota Prius last week.
"I can comment that the major factor is just the driver (of the Prius) not paying attention and then lost control. There was some debris on the road from sanding and that in the area but the biggest factor is not paying attention," RCMP Sgt. Derrick Donovan told the Grand Forks Gazette.
He also said that West Kootenay Traffic Services was waiting to do a mechanical inspection on the car.
"We don't believe there's (a mechanical) issue but we normally do a mechanical just to clarify there's nothing with the steering."
"We're still going to be a few weeks before our investigator finishes what he can say for sure, with the measurements and that, as far as the speed," Donovan said.
The accident took place on Jan. 26. on Highway 3 a little past Collins Road – between Grand Forks and Christina Lake.
The RCMP officer driving the truck was trapped inside the vehicle for 45 minutes and had to be extricated by Grand Forks Fire and Rescue.
While the officer and the driver of the Prius were taken to hospital, no major injuries were suffered and both have since been released.
