Residents from Grand Forks, Greenwood and across the region gathered at Marshall Lake for a “Surround the Lake at Sunset” event to show their support for keeping the lake on July 2.

Tammy Battersby helped organize the event with Christopher Stevenson, who is the creator of a Facebook group aimed at raising awareness about the current situation.

Recent events surrounding the Providence Marshall Lake Dam involve the federal government asking the City of Greenwood to look into taking over responsibility and liability of the lake.

Though located in the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary’s Area D, the regional district has shown no interest in the matter.

The deadline for the city of Greenwood’s decision has been extended to July 13.

A public affairs officer for the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources noted that if a decision is not made by July 13, the province would start making plans to deactivate the dam.

The lake will go from 6.5 hectares to 2.64 hectares, its original size.
