UPDATED: Sept. 9 severe thunderstorm watch for Grand Forks and Boundary ended

The severe thunderstorm watch for Grand Forks and the Boundary issued earlier today has been ended by Environment Canada.

Editor's note: Both watches for Boundary and West Kootenay ended.

Environment Canada has ended severe thunderstorm watches for Grand Forks and the Boundary and West Kootenay effective 5:43 p.m. today.

Earlier in the day, Environment Canada issued the bulletin to alert people in the area for the potential development of severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds.

In addition to the Boundary region watch, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued to the West Kootenay area as well, although as of 3:28 p.m., the warning changed to a severe thunderstorm watch.

"An upper disturbance moving northward from Washington state is bringing showers and thunderstorms and a risk of severe thunderstorms to the Kootenay and Columbia regions late this afternoon. A cold front moving through the central interior will bring showers and thunderstorms and a risk of severe thunderstorms to Prince George and the Cariboo- north including Quesnel region late this afternoon and early this evening. The main threat with these storms will be 20 mm hail and wind gusts to 90 km/h," the Environment Canada warning read.

In situations like the ones earlier today, Environment Canada advises people to monitor conditions and listen for updated statements – if threatening weather approaches, take immediate safety precautions.
