Over 45 kilograms of methamphetamines were seized near the U.S./Canada border on Dec. 4.

* The original release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated that methamphetamines were seized. Since then it has been determined that in fact, that was not the case. See below.

U.S. Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection agents seized approximately 45 kilograms (100 pounds) of ecstasy powder and methamphetamines near the Canadian border on Sunday (Dec. 4).

Twenty thousand dollars in U.S. currency was seized as well.

Canadian RCMP are working in collaboration with its U.S. counterparts to investigate the situation.

"The investigation is still continuing on both sides of the line," stated Grand Forks RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison.

"The U.S. Department Drug Enforcement Agency is working on the drug bust on that side, in concert with U.S. Border Control. On this side, we're working with both agencies to see what we can further develop."

According to a release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, agents discovered the drugs and money in three backpacks and a duffel bag in a field adjacent to the international border west of the Danville Port of Entry near Grand Forks, B.C.

It was originally thought that it was strictly methamphetamines that were seized but according to James Frackelton, public information officer for U.S. Border Patrol, testing has revealed that the majority of the drugs were MDMA or ecstasy powder.

The drugs and cash were turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

The methamphetamines had a street value of over $762,000 (US$755,250).
