SD51 is considering changing the school calendar to balance out school breaks. Superintendent Michael Strukoff says if changes are to be implemented it would happen at 2013 at the earliest.

During the District Design for 2013 forums, School District 51 (SD51) board will be asking residents to consider calendar changes to the school year.

SD51 is contemplating a “balanced calendar” which would change the current school breaks.

Currently, there are two-week breaks for Christmas and spring and a two-month summer holiday.

The changes would make the breaks more equally distributed throughout the year.

SD51 is considering these options, along with configurations to the school, due to shifting demographics and student enrolment numbers.

Michael Strukoff, SD51 superintendent, stated that the issue will be discussed during the forums.

“If there is an implementation the earliest would be 2013,” he said.

There will be a meeting at the Christina Lake Elementary School for residents at Christina Lake on May 16 at 6:30 p.m., and one at Perley Elementary School on May 23 at 6:30 p.m. for residents in Grand Forks.

For those in the West Boundary communities, there will be a meeting at Greenwood Elementary School on May 30 at 6:30 p.m., and the final meeting at West Boundary Elementary School on June 5 at 6:30 p.m.
